Pearl doesn’t like this part.

Pearl likes tragedy. Pearl likes the ocean. Pearl likes Templeton Rye and Tyrconnell and Johnnie Walker. She likes cold sheets and cold fingers and boiling water. She likes the snap of catgut and the snap of a flashbulb. Pearl likes so many things under the sun.

What she doesn’t like is this part. The end card, the gloaming, the silence after the last note. What she doesn’t like is the part in between.
